Cold Brew Facial Scrub- Facial Mask (9-7-17)
This is the ultimate recycle that benefits you in two ways. First you get to enjoy that cup o joe, and have a spa day all in one.
When you make your Cold Brew reserve the grounds to make your own simple facial scrub or facial mask. This only requires 2 ingredients, but you can use your favorite oil, Shea Butter, Coconut or Cocoa Butter, even Mango and the espresso grounds of your choice, to give your espresso facial mask a specialty coffee drink fragrance. If you whip the mixture, you have your own Frappe` Facial.
Cold brew coffee grounds are ideal, because the volatile oils and acids remain in the grounds, rather than in the coffee, so that coffee even strong, will not be bitter, and at the same time your skin will benefit from those acids to help exfoliate, while the coconut oil helps penetrate and moisturize, and it's suitable to use for acne, whether that is adult acne, or teen acne, it's antibacterial, antimicrobial and anti-fungal components, can help clear up, heal and prevent outbreaks. Coconut oil is generally compatible with all skin types, however if you do find that it doesn't work for you, then feel free to use another oil base that you prefer.
This is an especially fun gift for the coffee lover in your life and is suitable for female or male.
YIELD: You can make this one ahead to fill a 4-6 oz. container or make it up as needed, per personal use.
What you need:
Cold Brew Coffee Grounds* (see links below)
Coconut Oil (or your favorite, such as shea butter, mango, cocoa butter etc.)
4-6 oz. mason jar or spice or cosmetic tin
Label
For Gifting: Decorative jar or tin, ribbon, jute, burlap or lace, decorative label
Directions:
Grind your coffee beans or purchase pre-ground espresso coffee. For delicate skin, or young skin, you may want only a very fine ground coffee. For older skin, with more visible wrinkles, you may want a little courser grind, such as medium to fine, or a mixture of grinds. Prepare your cold brew. See the link below if you have not made cold brew before.
Mix together equal parts of reserved Cold Brew Coffee Grounds and 100% Pure Virgin Coconut Oil or your preferred oil. Scoop into a container. This is ready to use or will keep up to a year.
To Use: Coconut oil melts at a very low temperature, so it is easily absorbed by the skin. A little goes a long way, so use a small cosmetic scoop when applying to the face and add more if needed, but start with a very small amount. Use a couple times a week or use every other day according to your own skin tolerance and unique needs. Rub on the face, avoiding the eyes mouth and nostrils, allow the mask to penetrate the skin for 10-15 minutes, but you can leave it on longer if desired, then rinse off with warm water and pat the skin dry. Your skin will feel smooth and soft, but if necessary you can follow with your favorite moisturizer.
Tip: Whip this up with your immersion blender or mixer if you want a whipped version (note you may need a little carrier oil to whip to your desired consistency, any of your favorite carrier oils such as Almond, Grapeseed, Olive oil or your homemade herbal oils, will work, just a few drops is all that may be needed.
Tip: Use my Vanilla Almond Cold brew coffee grounds, for a little added espresso fragrance. (see the link below)
Note: You can use grounds from your hot brew, though there will not be as much of the volatile oils and acids that remain in the cold brew coffee grounds. You will still benefit from the exfoliating action and protection from the environment and free-radicals that cause premature aging, rough and dry skin.
Special Note: If you have more grounds than you can use, treat your plants with those grounds. They too will benefit from the acids from the coffee grounds. Or pour the grounds into your homemade fertilizer, then water and fertilize plants as needed. (see the link below for making your own environmentally friendly fertilizer).
