The hardest part of the entire process is waiting for the finished results, which takes about 6-8 weeks. But your time involved is a matter of minutes.
Any liquor can be used. It doesn't have to be the most expensive liquor in the store unless that's your favorite. A middle shelf variety works just fine and your finished results are as good or better than what you might purchase.
These make great gifts for the cocktail lovers in your life, so plan ahead so you have ample time for the infusion to fully develop before the special occasion. Now, will you save money? I can't even say honestly if you will, since I have not looked at the prices to compare, and I can count on one hand how many times I've been in a liquor store, but you will know what goes into your homemade version and you are in control of the taste you want to impart into the infusion. You also have the freedom to develop a flavor that simply isn't available in the flavored liquor varieties............yet.
For this infusion I'm using marshmallows. Yep, marshmallows. You can even toast the marshmallows if you'd like before making your infusion to impart that toasty, marshmallow flavor. Or perhaps a S'mores flavor with some added chocolate? I haven't tried making infused S'mores, but I can see the possibilities. If you do try, let me know. Oh, and so you know, there is a National Toasted Marshmallow day in August. So with your flavored Marshmallow liquor you can celebrate by the bon-fire and tuck a toasted marshmallow on a stick to garnish your cocktail.
What you need:
Quart Mason jar with lid and ring (clean and sterilized)
Label
Decorative bottle, ribbon, raffia, burlap or lace and decorative labels if gifting.
Jar and bottle funnel (optional but handy)
Ingredients:
1 Bottle Liquor (your choice, vodka, rum, etc. but for this one you probably want a light liquor)
1 bag Marshmallows (any brand, choose your favorite)
Directions:
Fill the jar half to 3/4 full of marshmallows. Pour the liquor over the marshmallows to within a 1/2 inch of the rim. The marshmallows will float. Place the lid on a tighten down firmly. Shake the jar to distribute the liquor evenly. Label with the liquor you used, in the event you want to make it again. Include any ingredients you may have added (like chocolate). Set in a cool, dark cupboard or pantry. Shake the jar daily to help distribute the liquor and dissolve the marshmallows.
Note: It takes 3 or 4 days for the marshmallows to dissolve completely. Just shake the jar, the sugars will settle to the bottom. Try a little sample, top off with more liquor if needed or add more marshmallows if the jar will hold more.
Set aside for 6-8 weeks until completely infused. Shake the jar and pour into bottles. Label and decorate if gifting. Add a recipe for a cocktail that uses Marshmallow flavored liquor or invent you own. Add instructions to shake before each use.
Suggested uses: Add a little to a cup of hot cocoa, or chocolate pudding or cake as part of the liquid called for in the batter. This might even be good in making that Sweet Potato Casserole we all seem to have to have during the holiday season. Or perhaps added to eggnog or pumpkin spice latte.
Note: When baked, the alcohol is evaporated, so there will be no alcohol effect, it will simply impart flavor. One cocktail, is called a Mash-Mello(R), it's a lemonade with Marshmallow flavored liquor and club soda over ice. There's also a Martini made with Marshmallow flavored liquor. I'm sure if you look online you'll find something that suits your fancy and that you know your recipient will enjoy.
