The pinwheels are great appetizers for any gathering and especially quick and easy for game days. They can be made ahead and baked just prior to serving. You can use either homemade pizza dough or packaged Pizza dough. Either way these are sure to be a hit at your next gathering.
I use a meat slicer to slice my ham. A meat slicer is a handy tool to have if you grow your own meat, or purchase meat in bulk. I actually have two slicers, one designated for meats the other designated for raw foods so there is no cross contamination. The meat or food slicer has a variety of settings for thinness or thickness you want your finished cold cuts, vegetables or cheeses. I have found that a light coating of oil sprayed or brushed onto the blade makes slicing cheese much easier. Since I buy bulk meats and cheeses, the slicers have been great time and money savers over the cost of pre-sliced deli meats and cheeses. Just trim off any excess fat from the home sliced meats. Save any trimmings to add to soups and casseroles.
Servings: One Dozen Pinwheels
Ingredients
1 package roll Pizza dough
1/2 pound Ham (sliced thin) (deli or home grown)
1/2 pound Swiss Cheese (sliced thin)
1/2 cup Mozzarella Cheese (shredded)
Yogurt Honey dip*
Directions:
Allow the pizza dough to reach room temperature. Roll out or stretch out into an even rectangle. Sprinkle half of the shredded cheese onto the dough. Add a layer of the thin sliced meat, then a layer of sliced cheese. Top with the remaining shredded cheese. Tightly roll the dough over the meat and cheeses, like a cinnamon roll, sealing the edge. Cut in 1" pinwheels. Grease a 12" cast iron skillet or 9 X 13" baking dish. Evenly space the pinwheels in the pan. Allow the dough to rise 15-30 minutes before baking or make ahead the night before, bring to room temperature then bake just before serving.
Bake in pre-heated 350 degree oven for 40 minutes or until browned. Serve warm with my Yogurt Honey dip.
NOTE: These can be frozen for quick snacks or added to the lunch menu.
