FRENCH BLACK COPPER MARANS
The Marans are a medium sized French breed (our FBCM are larger than a Rhode Island Red, our cuckoo are nearly as large as our Light Brahma), known for their dark chocolate colored eggs.
There are several varieties accepted by the American Poultry Association, including the Cuckoo and the Black Copper Marans. The Blue Copper marans have not yet been accepted by the APA, but is being perfected by maran breeders around the country. Marans are generally quiet and docile; but they are quite active, taking well to free ranging in rough terrain and are also tough and disease-resistant. They were originally bred in the marshy areas of France and can cope with damper conditions.
Marans originally had feathered legs, but the British breeders have bred this trait from them. It is still possible to have some offspring with feathered legs. (Our marans do have feathered legs, since they are the true French Marans). Though they are a medium to large sized breed, the Roosters make fine table meat, considered the finest meat in France. The hens lay 150 + large dark eggs annually (the French Black Copper Marans lay the darkest eggs of all the Marans). Egg color is considered an important factor to many exhibitioners, that they are now breeding for the darkest egg colors and use a scale from 1-10 from lightest to darkest. We prefer to breed quality in our flock so our egg colors are not the darkest on the scale. Some of ours lay from a 6 on the scale to an 8 on the scale, but not all will lay the darkest on the scale. If you're interested only in the darkest on the scale, we recommend that you seek out breeders that are concentrating on egg color rather than quality in the breed.
A cross between a Maran rooster and a blue egg laying Ameraucana produces the *olive eggers*. You may also cross A Maran rooster with a blue egg laying Cream Legbar for an *Olive Egger*, however the most common cross with the Maran X AM.

CUSTOMER COMMENTS:
David M: the chicks we got from you grew up so well that the ones I brought to the Okanogan Fair this year got Blue Ribbons? The judge that was there is a Judge for the bigger shows, and he said my French Black Copper Marans Cockerel was so nice, he thought I should show him in the big shows- and since then he's grown and flourished, and looks even better. Seriously, he's like the Icon-perfect example of his breed. The pullets have started laying, and they are GREAT hens. I can tell you we will definitely be coming back for more Marans of the same type, and some Easter Eggers too- most of the chicks were male (and very tasty. heh heh heh) but the females have been fantastic! So anyway, WOOO for your breeding stock!
James H: <We want> Some more Marans. We LOVE the ones we got <from you> last year.
