ICELANDIC: Another very rare "landrace" breed. The Icelandics were brought in by the Vikings in 9 AD. Called islenska haenan, Haughaensni or landna`mshaenan in the Icelandic language. The breed all but died out in its own country. Through conservation efforts, a few thousand of the birds exist around the world. Icelandics have no set colors or patterns. Some are crested, some are not. Our Icelandics carry blue genetics. Hens are known to go broody and to be excellent mothers. We had one recently that raised her chicks. And they are known to even hatch in winter and within a couple days they are treading through ice and snow without a hitch. This is a very winter hardy breed. Our Icelandics are from four entirely different breeding stocks, so it is possible to get both crested and non-crested offspring. The Icelandics lay white to light beige eggs. Our flock lays both colors. We have both light and dark birds in our flock, but because of the nature of landrace birds, no two are alike. Two of our lines are direct imports, the Buel line and Vala line. In July 2015, we acquired 3 cockerels from the Behl, Hlésey, Húsatóftir lines for additional genetic diversity.
And IF bro hasn't mentioned it enough, this is his favorite breed of all the JFA flocks. Quote from bro: *Well if I haven't mentioned these are my favorite breed, I'll say it here and now, I love these birds, they have the neatest personalities, as close to wild as you can probably get in a chicken. What really gets me chuckling is how they are when I go in their pen, gosh look at them and they freak out, ignore them and they will get in your way wondering why you're not looking at them, is way too funny. I had one that I'd ignore and she would jump on my shoulder and ride around with me checking out what I was doing, but if I turned my head and looked at her, those wings went out and she would let out a screech, oh my gawd was it funny.*

It must be noted: As reputable breeders, we do feel an obligation to inform you, that periodically there may be a *sport* (a trait that may not be consistent with what some may deem as acceptable traits). Because these are imported, the general breeding of the landrace is by natural selection, not by man intervention. We religiously cull out any undesirable traits within our flocks, however with hatching eggs, it is possible now and again for a hidden gene to surface. So if this is acceptable to you and you do not mind culling out if any appear, then we will be happy to ship out at any time, as long as the hens are laying.
