SPECKLED SUSSEX: Currently we have the Speckled Sussex, the most common of the sussex. The Sussex is a heritage breed, in recovery status with the American Breed Conservancy. The feathers of the Speckled variety all have a mix of mahogany and black with white tips. Sometimes the amount of white increases as the bird molts each year. This variety is the most common variety in the US. However, the Light Sussex is far more common in the UK. The Sussex chicken is an alert, docile breed that can adapt to any surrounding, they are comfortable in both free range or confined spaces and in the presence of humans. The breed sometimes (but not often), goes broody, the speckled version is the most likely to do so. They are good foragers. Hens lay 240-260 eggs annually and the roosters reach 9 pounds and considered a good meat bird. Another ideal backyard or barnyard breed. The Speckled Sussex are some of our main layers for consumable egg production.
PLEASE NOTE: WE NO LONGER RAISE THE SPECKLED SUSSEX, HOWEVER THE INFORMATION IS USEFUL TO THOSE INTERESTED IN THIS BREED AND WILL REMAIN ON THE SITE.
