Serves 4-6 Chickens
8 Inch pie tin or freezer safe mold
Strawberry Shortcake for Chickens
Ingredients:
1 C. Strawberry tops and blemished strawberries (or amount you have from one family serving)
1 C. Plain Yogurt (with the whey--liquid that may form on top)
1-2 pieces Whole Grain White Bread (broken up in pieces)
1 T. Chia Seeds (optional)
Run the strawberry tops and blemished strawberries through the blender to coarsely chop. Mix half of the strawberry mixture with half of the yogurt. Layer the ingredients, then freeze until solid. Garnish with strawberries and stems if desired. Sprinkle with Chia Seeds. Serve immediately or keep in the freezer until ready to use.
Tip: Either make your own yogurt, or use a plain yogurt with live bacteria for the probiotic benefits. Though the Chia Seeds are optional, they are a completely balanced seed, that is good for chickens, and in fact good for you. If you're canning or making jam, reserve the tops and blemished fruit, freeze until ready to use for making the Strawberry Shortcake.
Note: As always treats should be healthy and should be limited to only once or twice a week and only after the chickens have eaten their daily ration of feed. No more than 5-10% of their diet should contain treats.
