To celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, why not make some leprechaun eggs with the kids. This is an easy project they will love. Just be sure to supervise your kids if you use a hot glue gun. And remember, these eggs are not edible. They’re for display purposes only and do have small parts that may be swallowed.
Here’s What You’ll Need
• Blown Eggs (You can also use Styrofoam, artificial or plastic eggs.)
• Small black or green hat
• Google eyes
• Oval jewels (small)
• Black waterproof marker
• Foil or Cellophane Shamrocks
• Curls (Orange or Reddish Brown)
• Gold wire pipe cleaners
• White glue or hot glue gun
Instructions
Wash your eggs in warm soapy water; rinse and dry. Blow out eggs into a bowl by making a small hole in one end and a bit larger hole at the other end of the eggs. Reserve the egg contents for baking or scrambling. Rinse out the egg shell and allow to dry.
NOTE: Brown or tan farm eggs work well for the face color, but if using artificial eggs, you may want to dye them a light pink with food coloring or Easter Egg dye if you cannot find suitable colors.
Glue the eyes about 1/3 down from the rounded end of the egg. Add a jewel for the nose about 1/3 down from the eyes. Use a marking pen for the mouth and eye lashes.
Glue the curls to the top of the head for the hair and around the face for the beard. You can also make your own curls by wrapping suitable color knitting yarn tightly around a pencil and allow to set overnight until curled. Apply the same as purchased curls.
Bend the pipe cleaner in a square for the buckle and glue to the center of the crown of the hat. If you cannot find suitable small hats, a paper towel or toilet paper roll cut down and covered with felt will also work. Secure a small shamrock to the hat crown or brim.
Display with a shamrock garland or a tray with gold-foil wrapped candies. The finished eggs can be stored in a box with dividers for future use.
