Columbine is a very old homestead plant and a native to America. It grows readily from seed and prefers a well drained, moist, semi-shaded area. So it will grow well under the branches of trees, but not in deep shade. The plant can be transplanted from seedlings or from established plants successfully with plenty of water until well established in its new environment.
There are many color varieties and Columbine may be double or single petaled. This plant will grow from 12-24" tall, so it will work for the middle of a flower bed or in clusters under taller shrubs and plants.
Columbine is especially pretty with mixed wildflowers and returns year after year in most climates. I have found nothing that indicates that Columbine may be toxic to animals or fowl, so if used in a wildflower bed, it should not be of concern.
Columbine is a winter hardy perennial plant, and requires little care once it is established and will reseed annually to fill the garden bed if desired. It is not invasive in most climates. The plants bloom in May and through much of the summer.
If you are looking for a homestead plant that will provide years of enjoyment in a pleasing array of colors and forms, then definitely consider the Columbine. Hummingbirds, bees and butterflies are known to visit columbine frequently.
