Anna Jarvis had copyrighted and trademarked her own photographs and memorabilia, however greeting card companies and other vendors soon discovered the commercial value of making cards and other merchandise available to the public in commemoration of their own mothers.
In Anna Jarvis' mind, she owned Mother's Day, and spent many years suing companies that tried to capitalize on the event, and denounced charities that used Mother's Day as a means of fund raising, however she was never successful in stopping the trend, and later regretted that she had ever created the occasion.
Who could imagine that celebrating our Mothers for their Love, and Devotion could lead to so much turmoil in the life of the women that dedicated years reaching her goal? A woman that worked with the greeting card and gift industry to reach her goal. Of course today, Mother's Day is only second to Valentine's day for Florists, the Gift Market and Restaurants, that gear up for the annual event. Which was never the intention of the woman that tried to abolish Mother's Day prior to her own death in 1948.
Mother's Day is celebrated around much of the world, though the day may be different than the day we celebrate here in the US. Mother's day in many countries was celebrated in ancient times not as a celebration of motherhood, but a celebration of the Mother Church and of the Virgin Mary.
Of course Mother's should be celebrated and appreciated every day, for their countless value in raising their children. There is no greater love on Earth than the love of a Mother for her child, whether that is a human mother or a Mother Hen.
We proudly celebrate all Mothers and Women that devote their lives and unconditional love to the children in their lives, whether that is a biological Mother, adoptive Mother, step Mother, Teacher, or Broody Hen. Enjoy your special day!
