What you need:
Boiled Eggs
Egg Shells (washed with membrane removed)
Whole Cloves
Carrot (tiny wedges sliced from carrot)
*Peeps* cardboard packaging or Egg Carton
10 drops Yellow food coloring
1 tsp. Vinegar
1/2 C. Boiling water
Directions:
Prepare the eggs, and peel. Reserve the egg shell in 1/2 and 1/4 pieces (or egg shells you've used from baking, washed and membrane removed).
Prepare the egg dye: Mix the water, vinegar and food coloring. Add a boiled egg and dye to preferred color (the longer they sit in the solution the darker the color).
Remove the eggs from the dye and allow to dry. Slip each egg into a 1/2 egg shell. Add the cloves for eyes, and bit of carrot for the beak. Top each egg with 1/4 egg shell.
Note: The easiest way to get a 1/2 shell or 1/4 shell is to whack a raw egg with a table knife when using eggs for baking or breakfast. Use the photo as a guide for your own Easter Peeps. You can dip your shells into boiling water if you are concerned about pathogens from the egg shells.
Caution: Alert your recipients to remove the whole cloves and shells before eating.
