Chicken Coop Chatter©
Ingredients
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1 T. honey or garlic blend seasoning
1 cup warm water (warm to the wrist test)
Oil, for browning
Directions
Put flour, baking powder, and honey OR garlic blend seasoning in a large bowl. Mix well, add warm water and stir until dough begins to ball up. Knead the dough lightly in the bowl. Do not over-work the dough. After working dough, place back into lightly greased bowl and allow to sit an hour in a warm, draft free environment. (oven works nicely)
Heat frying pan or griddle, with a Tablespoon oil. Lightly flour fingers and pat and press out 2 inch size pieces of dough with your hands. Cut horizontally in middle of the dough with a knife (so the dough will fry flat and heat will thoroughly penetrate the center) to about 1/4-inch thickness and place in oil and fry until golden brown and turn over and cook opposite side until same golden brown. Dough is done in about 3 minutes depending on oil temperature and thickness of dough. (The dough will rise as it's cooking)
NOTE: If using honey you will have a sweet dough, suitable for honey, honey butter, cinnamon butter or jam topping. If using the garlic blend, you will have a bread suitable for serving with garlic butter, topped with parmesan cheese and great with any meat or pasta.
NOTE: This can be made into a pocket bread. Just make larger patties, cut horizontally through the center, leaving a pocket opening to stuff your favorite ingredients into.
The purpose of this recipe is to use minimal ingredients and tools, so you can take it camping or have an easy recipe to use with limited time or emergencies. Make up the dry ingredients ahead of time and store in an air-tight container or sealable bag. Add wet ingredients at the time of preparation. If using a large sealable bag, the dough can be made up right in the bag, for no mess clean-up.
If you would like thinner dough, roll out on a floured bread board and cut with a large biscuit cutter for even edges and appearance.
